Etsy Finds: retro coffee mugs

1., 2., 3., 3., 4.

It has been so cold lately that doing anything besides hiding under several blankets doesn't sound appealing. That, and school started again. So not much going on here in the world of fashion. Just some new wool socks, winter boots and experimenting with different lip balms.

Focus has shifted to drinking lots of tea, hot chocolate, and soup. Is it dry out or what? I've been eyeing up fun colorful mugs to use. I keep going back to 70's retro mugs on Etsy. They're so unique...a little hideous....but fun. They have me tapping into my inner Mary Tyler Moore a bit. Which is good; I need some inspiration around here. Because if Mary could live in cold and blustery Minneapolis and still look fabulous, there's hope.

Local Top 5: Coffee Shops

I've often been asked for recommendations on where to go/eat/stay around Milwaukee so I'm creating a few posts called "Local Top 5" and I'll run down the lists of my favorite places around town. Up first, caffeine, of course! In no particular order, here are some places that won't disappoint. My recommendations may change over time, but these are some good ol' standbys.

ALTERRA on Prospect: This became a daily visit when I used to live across the street from here. I love the sidewalk tables, the hanging plants inside, the lovely latte art, and the steamy squeals from espresso machines. There are numerous Alterra cafes in Milwaukee, but this one I call home. Info here.

ANODYNE in Bay View: As much as I love Alterra, their coffee is hella strong so if I plan to have more than one cup, I go to Anodyne. Their coffee is nice and smooth, balanced and bright. It has a great neighborhood feel and I never feel pushed out the door. I like the nice sturdy tables and natural light. Lulu the dog likes the dog water dishes outside.

BREWED on Brady: If I'm out and about on Brady St. during the day, I'll skip the Starbucks and head to Brewed. They have good food, lots of organic options, and a boho coffee house feel. They serve up Anodyne coffee so best of both worlds!

FUEL CAFE in Riverwest: No sissy coffee here. This moto racing themed spot is worth the trek . It was one of my regular lunch spots when I was working on the north side. They have great sandwiches. And fast and easy service. And the rock turned all the way up.

BIRDIE'S in Highland Park: On the border between Milwaukee and Wauwatosa, Birdie's is homey and smells like pies. Perfect, because pie is really good with coffee. I like the cozy atomostphere here a lot. Info here.

Coffee Break: hidden animal tea cups

Did everyone survive the snow storm? I was listening to NPR on the way home and heard Wisconsin's weather covered on "All Things Considered". That's crazy, because we only got like 1 inch of snow and a bunch of wind in Milwaukee. Al that cold weather has been making me crave things like soup, coffee, and hot chocolate.

These little teacups from imm living have a cute little surprise at the end of your coffee (or hot chocolate). Very cute.

Coffee Break: Alterra's Turkey Trot Blend

Thanksgiving is fast approaching so don't forget to buy coffee. I know, everyone loves that 2 hour nap after dinner, but some of us have to hit the road to see in-laws. I was at Alterra on Humboldt to grab some soup today and saw the Turkey Trot blend sitting next to their other new coffee this month, the Harvest Blend. Both look good, but the commentary on the Turkey Trot label sold me.

Coffee Break

Call me a yuppie, but sometimes I really love me some Starbucks. I took a detour from the drive home to sit and decompress/chill/chillax with some coffee, the neighborhood paper, and some pumpkin bread. Hope you guys got a chance to sit back and take a breather today.

Coffee Break GIVEAWAY!

We're back from the honeymoon. On the plane ride home I was really looking forward to settling back into real life, eating american food, and sleeping in. Today sleeping in meant getting up at 5am and taking a nap yesterday afternoon. Not quite adjusted after all that jet-lag. Thank goodness for strong coffee. I grabbed my new coffee maker, a fancy little moka pot for making espresso. Coffee break just got taken up a notch!

now......

To win your own moka pot, a nice little 12 serving Cuisinox Stainless Steel one, just leave a comment below. I will announce a winner Sunday night (8/2) and cookware.com will send it your way. Good luck!

Coffee Break

I'm going to be starting a new segment called "Coffee Break": occasional photo posts from myself and readers of their "caffeine refueling", "work room breather", or "morning routine". So send me your iPhone pics or digital photos of YOUR coffee breaks and I'll post them! Why coffee breaks? Because it's 15 minutes out of a busy day to stop and smell the roses (or coffee beans), take a breather, let your mind rest. It's like the American adult's mini version of "siesta" or "recess". Everybody should have a break during the day even if it is a small one.

And it's good for you:
